Welcome to CDM Finance
CDM finance is a unique web-based service that seeks to disseminate the findings of the project titled “Mainstreaming of the CDM opportunities in Indian Finance and Insurance sectors”. This website is geared towards increasing the Indian financial institutions’ awareness and understanding of CDM related opportunities, and in promoting their participation in CDM related projects.
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the market-based mechanisms formulated under the Kyoto Protocol to assist developing countries in achieving sustainable growth while helping industrialized countries to meet their Green-House Gas (GHG) emission reduction targets agreed under the Protocol.
India is emerging as a major world economy given its steady GDP growth of around 8 percent over the last few years. Increased economic development, however, has led to a higher demand for energy resources, thus increasing the pressure on the country’s already fragile ecology. In principle, CDM can reduce this element of conflict between ecological and economic concerns by channeling international funds for sustainable development and encouraging alternative energy generation through technology transfer. Further, by effectively mitigating Green House Gas emissions, CDM helps developing countries like India, to leap frog to cleaner technologies while helping industrialized countries to meet Green House Gas emission reduction targets agreed under the Kyoto Protocol. India, therefore, is considered as a potentially prime country for developing projects under CDM.
However, successful implementation of projects under CDM requires a strong capacity building among a diversified group of stakeholders involving institutional, financial, and industrial sectors. This website will offer comprehensive information on CDM related opportunities for the benefit of the Indian financial institutions. |
